Alternative Schools

Mississippi public schools have a dangerous attitude toward our "alternative schools" that needs to change. They consider these schools to be detention centers for "bad kids" where you send problem students you want to get out of sight and "whip" into shape.

The attitude should rather be that these schools are for children who have various psychological and behavior disorders, neurological disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and learning disorders which the mainstream classrooms and regular special ed classrooms are not equipped to handle. These children need individualized, non-traditional methods in order to thrive in a group environment and learn. Treating them like criminals in a mini-prison for ne'er-do-well good-for-nothing reprobates which the system has thrown in the trash is one of the travesties of our school system which often gets swept under the rug and forgotten.
