Unless you have been under a rock lately , I am sure you have seen the full out debate about race and breastfeeding on two similar breastfeeding photos , posted by moms at their college graduations.
Karlesha and Jacci , the two mothers who posted the photos aren't the ones who started the debate, It's simple minded people who want to turn everything into a war about race and cry racism at every little turn. I am not denying the fact that racism is alive and well in the USA ; however if you continue to cry racists, and racism at every little thing and turning everything into a race issue; you will developed the BOY WHO CRIED WOLF syndrome and we won't be quick to respond when something truly racist happens. These photos aren't racist, but you have people who want a race war over them. These photos and the reactions they received are because of the country / culture these ladies live in. The issue at hand isn't about black or white , but about normalizing breastfeeding everywhere.
It all started when Karlesha Thurman, an American student posted a photo from her College graduation back in May of 2014. The Internet went crazy and villianize her for doing so.
***photos taken from an American News sites***
And it was met with praises from American News sites as well
Breastfeeding advocates like myself came to her defense against the critics to help normalize breastfeeding and nursing in public.
Then you have Jacci Sharkey, a mother from Australia, who posted a photo of herself as well, breastfeeding her child at graduation. Now here is what I want you to pay attention to. Jacci is from Australia , they have very different views about breastfeeding in general. It is more acceptable to see a mother nursing in public there than it is in America plus they have laws that they enforce to protect breastfeeding moms. However you still have those in Australia who would prefer for a mom to nurse in private but mainly its a social norm to see a nursing mom.
The media in Australia unlike the USA painted a different photo of this nursing mom. Check out these headlines from Australian news sites.
Now when the Daily News shared the story from an Aussie news site, they used the same headline and put it under their world news section. This is where it all went downhill and you had immature people trying to turn this into a race war, instead of focusing on the fact that the country is talking about breastfeeding.
The daily news only shared a worldwide story and suddenly you have people claiming racism. There is nothing racist about these two photos nor the headlines they received. What any educated person would have saw, was the fact that Australia has more open views on breastfeeding in public while america has very closed views.
This is when you had immature people starting to state how racist the headlines are. Trying to shift this into a race war instead of how two different areas in the world view breastfeeding. One of the most horrendous examples was a blog posted by Ashley Wright.
Ashley made her entire blog about race and racism, not once did she mention the fact that this isn't a race issue. This issue is about how breastfeeding is viewed around the world. But instead , she chose to whine and cry Racism. Oh give me a break Ashley, there is nothing racist going on. What we have going on is folks like you (Ashley) trying to make this about race. The only way her blog and its title would make sense was had Jacci Sharkey been an American and at an American College when she posted her photo, then Ashley you and all the other immature people can scream out racism, but getting mad because this story has hit the USA news sites under the world news sections, and they are using the same caption from the Aussie sites is crazy.
Let's dissect Ashley's blog for the foolishness that it is:
First thing you can see from the photo is that she is addressing this a a race / color problem. In other words she wants to turn this into a black white issue instead of a normalizing Breastfeeding issue
Okay how in the world is Ashley comparing two photos shot in to different parts of the country to Hurricane Katrina or the unfair treatments to African Americans in our justice system and media? We cannot control how the Aussie Media works, we are Americans and location is the key in this story.
Now this is where Ashley loses all credibility, in comparing these graduating photos captions to this above photo dealing with Hurricane Katrina. Both photos were taken in American and yet both received different captions with racist undertones we can agree. however you cannot take two photos that were taken in two different parts of the world and cry Racism here in America. Maybe Ashley needs to take a closer looks at where these major news sites for the USA had these stories placed on their sites; it's located in the world news section. That means that these sites used the captions from the original Aussie source as they shared it under world news in there sites. and that is just what it is: World News not American News.
As you can see , the daily news which is a major American news source has the article listed under its world news section. This story wasn't an American story to begin with so the difference in the headlines aren't racist as Ashley is trying to make them out to be but more so a cultural thing. Aussie media is more open to breastfeeding while ours is not.
Then we get to the heart of the issue, Ashley is more concern with why major American Sites aren't sharing her photos of her breastfeeding than she is about the normalizing breastfeeding movement itself.
as you can see from the above photo, Ashley is more concern about becoming Internet famous , then the normalizing breastfeeding movement. She makes the ridiculous claims : stating that major news media in America do not show black women because we aren't adorable enough, but most importantly she is upset because they aren't sharing any of her breastfeeding photos. And the reason why , is because this country was founded upon racism. As a black woman / mother / breastfeeding advocate myself I find it sad and heartbreaking that Ashley is making this situation into a whining entitlement session and crying about racism, when it's not. It's very clear that she is only concern with becoming Internet famous and wanting to know why american sites aren't showing her photos of breastfeeding.
Well let's take a look at why major American sites aren't showing your photos shall we?!? :
These are some of the photos that Ashley wants to be shared by major American news sites; to help promote normalizing breastfeeding and nursing in public and she is quite upset (her words , not mines ) that they aren't sharing her photos. Now as beautiful and artistic that these photos may be; These. images aren't what we think about when we are trying to normalize breastfeeding. When was the last time you saw a naked mother nursing her child at the mall or the restaurant.
However Ashley is quite wrong, when I searched these sites for breastfeeding stories not only did they have white women but they had black women as well. And you will notice something quite different in the photos that these major news sites chose to share.
Now I wasn't the only one who saw, Ashley's blog as the foolishness it was for trying to make a race war between Karlesha and Jacci's photo. Let's take a look at some other folks who called her out on her nonsense.
Now Ashley ask this commenter what does location have to do with the articles title from major publications? Ummm Ashley , location has everything to do with it sweetie. Huffington post shared a world story and used the title from the original source, the articles are listed under world news. World news means news from around the world, in other words Ashley, it's not American news for it didn't happen in America. World News = any news that took place outside of America.
She stills doesn't get so she chooses to whine about it. Ashley thinks that because the American sites are reporting a story that they are the reason for the titles, no honey, the titles come from the origin of the story. The Aussie sites are the ones who reported it first. When it hit the american sites, it was using the same titles from the original source shared under world news.
Let's look at more comments from commenters who are calling her out on this foolishness
Again in this above photo you can see where Ashley is trying her best to make this about race and move the focus from how two very different countries view breastfeeding
More comments of people seeing the real issue at hand and not the race war Ashley wants it to be, and calling her out for what she is really doing , which is Attention seeking and trying to become Internet famous.
Now this is where I am certain that Ashley must be bipolar because when she gets called out for her crap by Natasha, she claims she never said that. Let me help refresh , Ms Ashley Wright's memory.
Maybe Ashley needs to have someone read her article back to her cause Natasha didn't make it up, these are Ashley's words not anyone's else's and just to be clear let me underline the key points.
I was quite shocked that she would take a breastfeeding issue and turn it into a whinning session on why it wasn't featuring her and trying to call racisim. Maybe it was because she felt that once it hit the American sites that she should have been called for an interview, after all she was called for an interview from News One Now on the Karlesha Thurman photo.
It's clear now that for Ashley this is more about being internet famous then helping the breastfeeding community. She says she wants to help normalize breastfeeding not only in the black community but in America in general. If that was true then her real issue would not be why her photos aren't being shared by major news outlets in America and trying to turn these two graduating photos into a race war. Her issue will be why can't America view breastfeeding like Australia?
To title Her blog:
Would have worked had she not turned it around into a race issue. It could have been the difference is, as an American I get shamed because my country has backward views. Or maybe what she really means is that she get shamed for the type of photos she posts regarding nursing in public in comparison to Karlesha and Jacci's photo .
Yeah I can see that blog title working if you wanted to compare it to you getting shamed because of the type of photos you post in regards to nursing. But then again you can not Compare your photo to that of the breastfeeding graduating moms.
Yet you have more people who are so simple minded that they try to turn every little thing into something racist
^^^^thank you Mike I see race baiters as well. We need to face the facts that women of all races are being victimized for breastfeeding especially while doing it in public. I guess these same folks don't see the news articles about moms like these:
Moms across our nation are being victimized and villianize for nursing while in public. This isn't a black / white issue. This is a motherhood issue that bonds mothers together regardless of race. That is why you have true breastfeeding advocates standing up for nursing mothers. Not so called advocates who want to make a name for themselves and turn everything into a racist ordeal.
***update***
This proves it was all about location not about race, man I wish I could move to this town
